Hassocks reach final

It has been a season of consolidation back in the top flight for Burgess Hill 1sts but they missed out on a place in the Sussex Plate final when losing 3-1 to Eastbourne on Sunday.

The visitors currently play in the division above Hill but they trailed early on as the hosts made a bright start and skipper Georgia Aloof played in Lynne Simmons.

Eastbourne were back on terms by the midway point and after the break it turned into a midfield battle, with chances at a premium.

But whenever Eastbourne did break through they found keeper Harriet Dakin in superb form. It was going to take something special to beat her and the visitors finally came up with two great strikes to seal a place in the final.

Hill can take heart from a gutsy performance and their young and largely inexperienced team will have learned much this season and can look forward to a more successful campaign next time around.

There was a tight and physical match at the Triangle, where champions St Francis drew 2-2 with Worthing 3rds.

The visitors applied plenty of early pressure and it was no surprise when they went ahead from a short corner.

But Saints drew level with a great individual effort from Ciaren Fitzgerald and then went ahead with another goal from top scorer Chris Batchelor.

Mark Butcher earned the man-of-the-match award for numerous great saves throughout the match but he could do nothing to stop Worthing from slotting in the equaliser with the last action of the match from another a short corner, given away by Patrick Alvgren.

Mid Sussex men’s 1sts lost 5-1 to Lewes in a tempestuous game and the 4ths missed out to Crowborough in a controversial top-table clash.
