Starting at Queen Elizabeth Country Park and armed with head torches, warm clothing, nutrition, maps and mobile phones, 86 runners took up to nine and a half hours to complete the 26.2 mile course which features 3,365 ft of climbing. Watts, an experienced marathon runner who has been proving his form recently, took a brilliant fourth spot in 3:34.12, just missing out on the medals. Further afield, Carl Bicknell and Kat Barrett ran the Sturminster Newton Half Marathon in Dorset on Sunday. In very hot conditions and on an undulating course, both ran well with Barrett finishing in 1.41.33 despite cycling 50 miles the day before and Bicknell 1.45.32 on his comeback from injury. In the Clair parkrun, Harrier George Adams finished in an excellent second place with his time of 19:43 and, in a field of a whopping 500 runners in the Tilgate parkrun, Paul Cousins was fourth (17:59), Barry Tullett 12th (19:22) and Julian Boyer (19:46) 17th.In the Sussex Veterans League on 29th July at Lewes, a combined Haywards Heath Harriers and Lewes AC team took a fantastic victory in the Men’s contest, beating Eastbourne on the night. Standout performances came from Paul Cousins who won the 5000m in 17:16.6 and Mike Bale who won the shot with a throw of 7m85. Julian Boyer was third in the 400m with a stunning time of 63.8.Amongst the ladies, the combined Harriers and Lewes team were a close fourth with Helen Diack, on her return to competition following the birth of her child, and Linda Tullett securing some excellent podium finishes across their events.
