HAYWARDS HEATH HARRIERS: Third for Lo and a great return to racing for Davies

Her excellent time of 39:32 was six minutes quicker than last year in this multi-terrain, two lap race taking in a rugby field, local roads and a section of bridleway.

Mark Davies was best placed Harrier in 14th in his return to racing with a brilliant time of 37:55 on this undulating course. Davies has done little running since his sub-3 hour Chicago Marathon last October, making this performance even more notable.

With the Harriers seeking to retain the league this season, an impressive 25 club members took on the race which certainly won’t hurt its chances and they made the course look easy with excellent performances throughout.

In other events this weekend, Kat Barrett won gold in her age group in the national sprint triathlon championships.

Mountain runner Tim Hicks took on the 11 mile Cader Idris mountain race, one of the toughest fell races in Wales, starting and finishing at sea level, on varied terrain and climbing 3000ft and back in between.

40 mph winds greeted the runners at the the summit giving a wind chill of minus 5, an improvement on the forecast snow and hail. Tim was pleased with his time of 2:09:29 which placed him 141st out of 236 runners.

Youth Development League

Last Saturday, Haywards Heath Harriers U17s and U20s competed in the Youth Development League at Poole as part of Team Sussex (with Lewes AC and East Grinstead AC).

Despite only two boys from Haywards Heath competing, they achieved three personal bests and one equal best performance between them. Simeon Cousins, in his first year as an U20, produced an excellent victory in the 400m A String with a huge personal best time of 50.8, followed up by an equal personal best in the 200m A string of 23.2 finishing third. Twenty minutes after completing the 200m, he won the 800m A string in 2:05.1.

In the U17 age group, Christian Lambert ran a personal best in the 100mH A string with 17.0 finishing third, only the second time he has run over the distance, fifth in the 200m B string with a personal best of 25.7 and competed as an U20 in the Discus with a throw of 17m92, finishing fifth in the A string and throwing a heavier discus than he was familiar with.

Both boys were also part of the U20 4 x 100m relay team where they finished second in 47.2. With a small team, Team Sussex finished seventh and are currently sixth in Division 1 (having just been promoted from Division 2).
