Haywards Heath pair Derek and John win National Seniors Pair Championship

The Haywards Heath pairing of Derek May and John Armstrong have won the National Seniors Pair Championship, a national matchplay competition organised by the Royal British Legion.

The semi-final and final were both played at Staverton Park Golf Club located in Daventry Northamptonshire. The semi final against Langdon Hill golf club was closely contested all the way, however two birdies on the home stretch by the Haywards Heath pair saw them win on the final hole.

The final on the following day was between Haywards Heath and Green Mount golf club from Lancashire. The Haywards Heath pairing looked to be running away with it, as they were three up after 9 holes but the Lancashire lads pulled them back until there was only one hole between them, but a par on the 17th hole was enough to win the match for Derek and John 2 & 1.

This was the first ever win for Haywards Heath Golf Club in this regional competition and demonstrates the overall strength of the club, coming so soon after the club winning the Birchwood Trophy, a Sussex County knockout event at Singing Hills the previous week.

The club are also in the final of the Gilbert & Print plate a Seniors event also organised by Sussex County Golf.
