Haywards Heath Tennis Club hold finals day

Saturday saw Haywards Heath Tennis Club host its annual Finals Day and spectators watched some close matches played out in warm sunshine.

The day began with the Mens Singles which saw Andrew Douglas beat Richard Valdez in two hard fought sets, 6-4, 7-6, Douglas recovering from a 3-5 second set deficit to seal the win. 

Next up was the Ladies Doubles with Elsa Matanguihan and Helen York taking on Val Harvey and Mona Carr-Pacquay.  Matanguihan and York swept through the first set 6-0. Harvey and Carr-Pacquay rallied in the second but were eventually overcome 7-5.

In the Mixed Doubles Alex and Elsa Matanguihan played Nick Rider and Carr-Pacquay in what became a hard fought battle.  Rider and Carr-Pacquay edged the first set tie-break 10 points to 8, and then took the second set 7-5 after nearly two hours of play. 

In the last match of the day defending champions Alex Matanguihan and Martin Goodwin faced former champions Andrew Douglas and Nick Rider in the Mens Doubles.  Douglas and Rider won a competitive first set 6-4 before Goodwin and Matanguihan responded to come through the next two 6-3, 6-2.
