Hurst carry theirtitle-winning form into the openingsummer fixtures

Hurstpierpoint men’s tennis teams carried their good winter form into the first of the summer tests as both first and second teams opened with wins.

Both men’s teams won their Winter Leagues, with the firsts, skippered by Alan Dovey, heading Division 7 East to reach the county-wide Division 6 for the first time, while the seconds, led by Rob Timms, were also promoted as champions of Division 10 East.

In their summer openers, the second team beat Cooden Beach 3-1 and the first team, playing in the Summer Division 6 for the first time, defeated Angmering 4-0.

Chairman Alan Bedford said that for a small village club to have both men’s teams as champions was a great achievement.

Weald: It has been a busy time with numerous matches across the county.

Highlight of the weekend must be the ladies 1st team’s 5-1 home win against The Rookery Club,Brighton in what was their second Regional League match.

After a heavy loss at Westside two weeks earlier the team was at full strength as they won all four singles.

At No 1 captain Petra Sedova battled hard to beat Lisa Phillips 6-4, 6-3 in a long, mentally draining encounter but Freya Loughton won comfortably 6-4, 6-1 against Alice Robson. That score was matched by Flaminia Martin against Sharon Fitton, while Claudia James fought back from a set down to defeat experienced opposing captain Helen Mitchell 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Petra and Claudia then won the top doubles in a match tie break decider but the Rookery avoided the whitewash by taking the final doubles 4-6, 6-7.
