In Group E, Hurst defeated sides from Boswells School, Cardinal Newman, Grammar School at Leeds, Newcastle Central High and Northampton High School, scoring 66 times in the process.

A further win against Barking Abbey in the last of their eight fixtures would have sent the girls into the semi-finals. The match could not have been tighter.

The Barking attack was thwarted in the first half to leave Hurst’s shooters Libby Severs and Rachel Ferguson with opportunities to build a lead. They put the side 6-3 up at the break.

The coaches had strong messages to give their respective sides before the restart knowing that the losers would go no further in the competition.

In the closing moments, Hurst went behind for the first time in the match but showed their resolve by equalising with seconds to spare. 8-8 read the final score.

Although the points gained from the draw proved not quite enough for Hurst to proceed, they did secure the top ten placing and thereby record another golden moment for Hurst netball.

Head of Hurst Netball, Rebecca Jutson, was unspeakably proud of her team after the final match but later commented, “To get points in seven of our eight matches in the National Finals is an incredible achievement.”

“Our players were outstanding and I believe there were many promising young women on the courts today who will be the future of England netball.”
