Hurstpierpoint A triumph against Hassocks E in Harper Plate Final

The match played at the Lindfield Club commenced with Hurst’s dynamo Dave Fry showing good potting form against the wily Stuart Wilson who put up a fierce defence in a 59-34 defeat.

It was a dream pairing for Hassock’s dazzling Dan Chambers to have the opportunity to take out one of the MSBSL big gun’s Barry Martin. Chambers commenced with a no fuss display and made it difficult for the mighty Martin to develop his renowned break building, this he did by securing a 22 point lead with just the six colours remaining. Martin used his vast experience by making it difficult for his young opponent when securing snookers, he dug in to edge home 60-46.

The creative Gary Cragg was aware that he had to be in top gear to oust the flamboyant Stuart Williamson to avoid the team whitewash, Cragg played a canny frame to make life difficult for the feared Williamson, eventually Williamson broke down the strong defence by his determined opponent to go over the wire with a 67-51 win.

It was a disappointed for Hurst’s Martin Payne and Lee Morley along with Hassock’s Jason Pennicard and Andy Funnell who were denied playing following Hurst’s 3-0 victory, the match was well marshalled by referee Willem Mol.

WEDNESDAY SHIELD

The Wednesday Shield Final played at the Balcombe Club brought together Division One Scaynes Hill and Division Two Ansty E.

The underdogs took a deserved lead when the classy Chris Kingscott produced a shining performance against the revelrous Richard Pledger taking the frame 47-16. The energetic Graham Stevens had other ideas when he took on the dynamic Derek Finch to give his team the equaliser with a comfortable 58-23 win, this was followed by the Hill’s robust Michael Rain convincingly defeating the determined Ross Tyson 68-28.

The family orientated Scaynes Hill squad saw the spectacular Nigel Stevens on top of his game when he outplayed the brave Andrew Oades 40-3 giving his team a 3-1 victory, the unlucky players not to compete were Ansty’s Dennis Lomas and Hill’s Malcolm Stevens, Dennis Wakeford was the match official.

THE SAYERS CUP

The Sayers Cup Final played at the Balcombe Club saw Wednesday Division One Hassocks F gaining a 3-0 victory after a brave display shown by the Division Two leaders Hurstpierpoint B.

The opening two frames were tight encounters as both were black ball finishes, the perilous Paul Hickman outsmarting the wizardry of Mick Wren 51-49 then to see his colleague Alan Peacock, a tough nut to crack, producing a dogged display against the marauding Adam Moosun edging home 42-36.

This left Hurst’s stylish Sam Thomson to overcome the mighty Mike Robertson to avoid a whitewash, alas, Robertson was in no mood to succumb and took the frame 44-22 to ensure his team’s name would be engraved on the cup.

The unlucky players not to perform on the green baize were Hassock’s Ron Launder and Adam Parsons along with Hurst’s Steve Grasso and Steve Williams, Ian Janman proudly refereed the match.
