Crawley Thaiboxers Ben Hodge and Ruth Ashdown from Crawley’s Lumpini Muay Thai Gym in London on Saturday March when they line up for a 10-strong England team in an eagerly awaited showdown against China.
Fighting at 74kg, Hodge has been drawn in the fourth of ten bouts against Guo Xichuang, whilst Ashdown at the 55kg limit faces Gong Yanli in what could be a match-deciding sixth contest at ILEC Conference Centre in Earls Court.
Commenting on the largest group of professional fighters from China ever seen in Europe, Lumpini Muay Thai Gym’s trainer, John Jarvis said: “This is something of a journey into the unknown. We’ve seen a little bit of Ben’s opponent on YouTube, but that’s about it.
“Ruth is fighting has only one defeat in 25 contests and the rules will also suit the Chinese far more than us.
“However our fighters are always in top shape – and with a large contingent of fans making the journey up from Crawley, we’re looking forward to proudly representing England.”
A sell-out crowd of 1,000 is expected at the ILEC, whilst in 53 countries an audience of well over 150 million will watch the inaugural battle via Henan TV in China.
Doors open at 6.30pm.
