The annual billiards challenge played between Mid Sussex and Lewes was played at the Keymer and Hassocks Sports and Social Club.
Last season’s fixture saw both the Middies A and B sides gaining success, this was not the case this time as all Lewes players brought their top game to the green baize to see their A team winning 799-583 and the B team 800-654.
The opening frames in the A team match saw both visiting players winning, Leo Hare beat Ken Warren 200-148 with Steve Roberts defeating Ian Janman 200-143. Their colleague Gary Page turned on the heat to oust Stuart Williamson 200-92, this left the host’s Barry Martin to avoid the whitewash, this he did by the narrowest of margins by outwitting Richie Barrett 200-199.
The Middies Martin Payne was due to referee at this event, however, due to two players having to pull out at the last moment he was invited to play. His opponent Terry Mills opened up a healthy lead, Payne came back strongly to build a 63 break being the best on the night, alas, he was not able to overhaul Mills who took the frame 200-184. Lewes continued their winning streak with Ian Muldoon defeating John Clayton 200-162, Darren Short overcoming David Page 200-161 and Pat Adams completing the rout by gaining a 200-147 success over Chris Morgan.
The match referees were Dennis Wakeford, Maurice Wickens, Norman Green, Stuart Burrell and Roy Tucknott.
