These pictures were published in the Mid Sussex Times in July of that year and show some of the sporting superstars who attended the school, in Penland Road, Haywards Heath.

The girls were queens of the pool when they took two cups – including the overall winner’s cup – at the Mid Sussex Swimming Gala at Oathill School, competing against eight other schools.

The trophy cabinet at Harlands was full to bursting in 1980.

The pupils also won: The Foyles Athletics Cup for the third year running; the Mid Sussex five-a-side trophy at Oathill School, beating seven other schools; and the Mid Sussex seven-a-side trophy.

In addition they have won the Mid Sussex six-a-side trophy, the Warden Park five-a-side trophy, and the Oathill five-a-side trophy.

Quite a haul.

When asked what their secret was, sports master Mr Glyn Turner said: “A lot of practice in the lunch hours and after school, lots of encouragement and, of course, the kids are good. I’m very proud of them all.”
