Saying farewell to Mrs Tyndale

While school days may be little more than a hazy memory, we all remember our favourite teacher.

That person who made learning fun, inspiring us to try harder and explore new things; our memories placing them on a higher and higher pedestal as the years fly by.

One such teacher was Grace Tyndale, deputy headmistress at Ditchling Hill School, who retired in 1980 after 20 years at the school.

A report in the Mid Sussex Times that July called Mrs Tyndale’s leaving “a sad day” for Ditchling Hill – but she was given a grand send-off.

The report stated: “Mrs Tyndale first came to the school in 1960 and was made deputy head in 1968.

“Among her many duties has been teaching maypole dancing for the past 18 years, which the children perform at the Ditchling Village Fair every year.

“She has also taken part in numerous school Christmas plays, whether as Jack’s mother, a member of the Mafia or an inebriate shepherd.

“She commanded boundless love and respect from the pupils and her loyalty was an example to the whole school.”

Staff and students from 1960-1980 joined friends and parents at a party for Mrs Tyndale at Ditchling Village Hall,

She was showered with gifts, including a cut glass rose bowl with roses, six cut glass brandy glasses with brandy, a watercolour picture of Ditchling by Margaret Milne and an electric sewing machine.

She was also presented with an album full of pictures and stories recording her life in the school, with many reminiscences by former pupils and colleagues.

Were you one of Mrs Tyndale’s pupils?
