Lockdown means lots to do for Piltdown Golf Club staff

Another lockdown meant a pause in golf at all clubs, and while this was most frustrating for keen golfers, it provided an opportunity for the greenkeeping staff at Piltdown to progress their continuing remedial work and other winter projects.

The course promises to be in excellent shape by the start of the next golfing season.

Just prior to lockdown, Ben Todd beat Tom Langley-Poole 3 & 2 to take the Hanmer Bowl. The Southon Salver was won by Michael Haynes with 39 points and runner-up was Simon Bulteel with 37.

The Tuesday Boys squeezed in their Terry Kelly Trophy in what was turning out to be a very busy golfing week and on a day of excellent scoring by many players Nigel Williams claimed the trophy with 40 points on countback from Mike Taylor.

Post lockdown the members have enjoyed a mixture of competitive and friendly golf and, of course, the resumption of Tuesday Boys golf.

A Stableford in support of the Royal British Legion, rescheduled to Wednesday, was well supported and raised £150 for the legion. Paul Fairbairn won the men’s section and Sheena Parker the ladies.

Finally, wet and windy conditions on Sunday didn’t prevent Simon Bulteel, Alistair Ferguson, Mike Haynes and Andrew Selby from playing the final round of the Princes Cup Foursomes knockout.

The standard of golf was high despite the weather and the match was won by Bulteel and Ferguson. Club manager Phil Bonsall says he is delighted that despite two lockdowns and a fair amount of rain, all the main club knockouts have been completed this year.
