Range of visitors take advantage of Weald Squash Open Day

A range of visitors from 4 to 80 years old took advantage of the Weald Squash Open Day to try out the squash courts, many for the first time with some returning to try out their past racket skills.

It was also a chance for local residents to pop into a club they might normally drive past to see the new clubhouse and its balcony that was shown off to great advantage on the sunny day.

Nic Davies, the new coach at Weald, ran the day with everyone having the chance to learn the basics, progressing quickly into a full game. Along with rackets to test and a speed gun both visitors and existing members could try out something new and look forward to trying out the coaching sessions that Nic runs on Friday afternoons.

A highlight in the afternoon was an exhibition match as Nic faced the Weald men’s champion James Sweeney (pictured).

An enthralling game ensued as each player dug in to win games a piece with Nic’s speed around the court and tenacity counteracting James anticipation and strategic shots.

The result could not have been closer as Nic found two lucky shots at the very end to win 9-8 in the deciding fifth.
