Heath U14s were just too strong for a determined Horsham side

Seven wins from seven league games with 4 try bonus points secured in every game meant that the team are once again County Champions - a feat they were achieving for the fifth year in a row.

Horsham visited Whitemans Green fancying their chances of an upset particularly as they had the tightest defence in the league having only conceded 38 points in all games up to this match and sitting second in the table. Heath were in no mood for a shock and immediately set about the match with a clinical intensity to shut out their opponents. Quick ball from their impressive pack was spun wide down the line for winger Owen Ratcliffe to speed in for the first score. Ratcliffe converted for 7-0. Heath were straight back on the offensive from the restart and when Horsham infringed in front of the posts Ratcliffe stepped up and slotted the penalty for 10-0.

Horsham fought back well and their big pack succeeded in achieving territory from which they pulled a score back to make it 10-5. Heath were however both ruthless and relentless in their attacking play with good speed from the other winger Rory Adams to touch down restoring Heath’s ten point advantage. Even though Horsham chucked the kitchen sink at Heath through the drives of their forwards, the home side tackled ferociously to keep out the attacking threat. Having weathered the storm Heath scored again through skipper Dylan Thomas to take a 20-5 lead into the break.

At halftime Heath rung the changes and showed their strength in depth With 3 key players missing Heath were still able to call on their substitutes to maintain the effort and search for that 4 try bonus point. It was Horsham who were to score next with an interception from their fly half taking the score to 20-12. Heath dug deep and were able to close out the game after a break from deep was finished off with a second try of the game for Man of the Match Thomas.

So Heath came through their toughest league encounter of the season with flying colours in a match played in a good spirit against a much improved Horsham side. This was a great team performance from the squad who now have a few weeks to enjoy their success before they look to win the Sussex league and cup double in the County Final.
