Heath Under 10s defeat Gloucester County Champions

The two sides are the respective reigning County Champions of Sussex and Gloucestershire and agreed to match up on the playing fields of Eton being a sort of halfway point between the clubs to see whether the South or the West country would hold the bragging rights at Under 10 level rugby.

Each club took two teams plus supporters to the fixture which was eagerly anticipated given the strength of the sport of rugby in Gloucestershire and they were not left disappointed as the quality of rugby from all was consistently high. . Hugely committed efforts from both Heath sides led to convincing wins for the Sussex champions with wins for the A team in their two games by 3 tries to 1 and 4 - 0 and for the B team 5 - 1 and 4 tries to 0. All matches were played in a great spirit in front of vociferous but appreciative support. Following the game both teams enjoyed Sunday lunch in the Eton school dining room and a tour of the school. Current Heath player George Melik who formerly played for Cirencester was presented with the winning shield for what is set to become an annual contest between the two clubs and will help to foster relationships out of Sussex.

Heath followed up the Cirencester win by entering three sides into the hotly contested H Cup which had been rearranged following postponement due to snow. Again the Under 10s showed the depth of their squad with one team winning the A pool, and the other two sides finishing runners up in their respective pools. Other clubs at the event hosted by Heath included Hove, Horsham, Pulborough, and Heathfield. Head Coach Dan Vander expressed his pride in the entire Under 10 squad commenting “ We have a great squad of developing Under 10 players and I’m proud Heath put on a day to be proud of”.

The Under 10s latest fixture took them to the Curtain Raiser Cup at The Stoop before the Harlequins match against Exeter Chiefs . Again two sides travelled and had to compete in a very strong pool featuring mainly Surrey and London sides .The A team won all but one of their games and the B team competed so well against quality A sides (including taking the scalp of Old Whitgiftians A) that they were awarded the DHL Team Spirit trophy for the manner in which they played their rugby. Another weekend of rugby that the squad will not forget as they progress towards the business end of the season.
