Season starting to rev up for Mid Sussex hopefuls

The season is starting to rev up, with Lindfield’s Chris Sugarhood, Shirley Nelson, Carol Watson and Sue Willmott cruising into the county fours quarter finals with a 25-5 demolition of Victoria Drive before bowing out 11-21 to favourites Eastbourne.

The ladies also played in pairs (Nelson & Willmott/ Sugarhood and Watson) to win first round National Over 55s matches. Watson and Willmott also teamed up to win 22-16 at Haywards Heath in the county pairs.

In the Stuart Oxley Chris Reynolds, Carol and Ian Watson and Keith Holman won 23-7 at Handcross, while Carol and Keith teamed up to win 22-6 in the national mixed first round at Uckfield.

Adastra’s Rita George skipped her fours to a 21-16 win at Hailsham in the Gladys Rowland on Saturday morning and in the afternoon they had 18 attend an open session at the club, where two applied to join and five others showed an interest.

Hurstpierpoint fell 2-3 in the first hurdle of the Men’s National Top Club at Southwick Park but their B team produced a strong finish to beat Henfield B 21-16 in the Edward Rowland Cup.

Brian Truran sailed into round 2 of the Champion of Champions with a stunning 21-9 victory over Henfield’s Dave Phillipson.
