Squash at the Weald

Two Weald teams faced Dolphin last week, but failed to get a win in either match.

The 3rd team started well against Dolphin 4ths, with Clive Turner fighting back with his deceptively casual cross-court drops to level the scores before his opponent stretched too far to retrieve a drop and was forced to retire. Sarah Naish staged a bold comeback from 2-0 to win as her boasts started to find their mark.

But unfortunately, Weald could not find that elusive deciding win as both Trevor Morgan and Stephen Chinn surrendered early leads to go down 1-3, while Bob Brimfield was outplayed in three as cross-court returns whistled past him.

Playing for the 1st team, Chris Torney worked hard to stay in his match against Dolphin 2nds and his determination and consistency under pressure paid dividends in the decider as he won 3-2. Mark Pearson gained an early lead with his unconventional play but suffered due to a lack of match practice in going down 1-3, while Joe Mack struggled on the slower bouncing courts, losing in three. Player of the match was Sam Hanbury as he took charge of his game against a superior opponent, keeping the pressure on with good length shots to win 3-1. But Mark Wheeler’s game did not suit the away courts as he lost in three.
