But it was not all success for the club as the ladies Top Club squad were squeezed out on shot difference by Gildredge Park.

In the men’s two-bowl singles Terry Hughes claimed the prized scalp of Middleton Cup skip Ollie Ovett by seven shots at Preston, while in the main singles event Keith Holman got the better of Tom Palmer 21-16 and is now the club’s lone survivor in the third round.

In the county pairs there were wins for Palmer & Ian Watson and Peter Gacsall & Mick O’Donnell. O’Donnell also made progress in the unbadged singles.

In the national double fours there was a resounding 25-4 success over Mackie for Chris Reynolds, Terry Hughes, Graeme Geddie and Palmer. They now await their own B team or Preston in the second round on Saturday.

In the Edward Rowland, the hosts slipped to a 10-shot defeat at the hands of an Alex Parsons-led Lewes but there was better news in the Tom Francis double rink as Lindfield put out reigning champions Popes Mead by eight shots.

On Saturday the Lindfield Club played an active part in Village Day, with the target bowls and coaching proving popular.

Adastra held their annual captains charity day on Bank Holiday Monday, when the chosen charity was Great Ormond Street Hospital.

A total of 60 members turned out, 40 of whom competed in varying forms of bowls and then enjoyed an afternoon cream tea and a barbecue in the evening. The event raised more than £600.

Last Friday the ladies won through to the last eight of the county triples by beating Gildredge Park but then succumbed to Bexhill in the afternoon.

Adastra also lost in the first round of the Tom Francis to a strong team from Burgess Hill.

There was a comfortable Edward Rowland win for the St Francis quartet of Mike Truran, Dennis Chapman, Paul Guest and Tony Jarvis as they beat Shoreham 19-11.

Haywards Heath ladies made their way in the Top Club competition by beating Lakeside by 19 shots. There were defeats for the singles and fours but the triples and pairs won well, with the latter doing so by 28 shots. Bexhill are the next opponents.

New member Lionel Ripley made a good start at Newick where he was part of the winning triples team in the Gentlemen’s Day tournament. He partnered Norman Birch and Tony Welfare.

In the men’s Top Club Newick went out to West Hoathly, who also won the annual friendly mixed match, where Mary Lynch’s rink were the only winners.
