The track brings further glory for Haywards Heath Harriers

Harrier Jack Chivers won 800m and 5,000m gold medals in his age group in the Southern Counties Veterans Athletics Club Track & Field Championships at the Julie Rose Athletics Stadium in Ashford on Saturday.

Jack clocked 2:23 for the 800m and 18:09 for the 5,000m, excellent times for his first competitive races in the events on the track. Jack was delighted with his performance: “As well as picking up medals, it was useful practice for the Masters World Championships in Lyon in August.”

Closer to home in the Southern Athletics League at Lewes on Sunday, there were several winning performances and top three placings as the Harriers took on club athletes across the South. A Haywards Heath Harriers and Lewes combined team finished third overall in a great team display with Laura Penfold, Katie Grant, Abigail Redd, Lucie Venables and Tom Mullen winning their events. Full results are at the end of this report.

With the South Downs Relay just around the corner, many of the Harriers spent their weekend and evenings testing their form on their respective legs.

Ahead of that, attention turned to the West Sussex Fun Run League’s 10km Trundle Hill Run last Wednesday - also an ideal test given its off-road and hilly route.

Just back from crossing the Sahara Desert in the Marathon des Sables, Phil Payne (43:07) shook off injury to finish in 19th and first Harrier home, an impressive time on this tough course. Passing this test confirms Payne’s spot in the South Downs Relay team. There were also good runs from Mark Armitage (51:14), Steve Horn (59:23) and 1:00:58 Michelle Holdstock (1:00:58), who was first lady amongst the Harriers.

Rupert Purchase (1:02:44), Natalie Chivers and Jenny Denyer (1:21:10) rounded off a good day for the Club.
