Still buoyed from last weekends draw with East Grinstead, Burgess Hill 1st XI this weekend played host to South Saxons.

The visitors had some very skilful players, but Hill have sorted themselves out defensively since christmas and repelled all the attacks. Midfielders Rebecca Chee, Ciara Branagan, Johanna Lawless and Anefa Burke worked hard to drive Hill’s attacks and the breakthrough came with a fierce strike from the top of the circle by Chee.

‘Keeper Harriet Dakin, who has had 3 consecutive clean sheets, did her bit to maintain her record by saving a flick midway through the half, and Hill then doubled their advantage when Lynne Simmons diverted a Branagan shot beyond the visitors ‘keeper.

In the second half the game became much more stretched and feisty, with goals disallowed and cards being issued. It was Hill’s 2 oldest players who combined to put the game out of sight, when right-back Wendy Junior provided a diagonal ball for Simmons to deftly roll the ball around the on-rushing goalie. Not what the Coach would have wanted, but effective none-the-less.

Towards the end of the game, battling Saxons converted a short-corner to leave the final score 3-1.

Next weekend Hill travel to close rivals Hailsham.
