In the first full week of the season the teams battled hard, but could not quite find a win despite the roll-out of the new team shirts.

Away at Sussex University, the second team lost 1-4 in what an extremely competitive match with Mark Pearson the only winner as he mixed up the shots to earn a 3-0 result.

There were some close results as Chris Torney kept fighting back with his tactical game to go into the deciding fifth and remain neck and neck until the last two points, losing 2-3, while Julian Drage pulled back a two game deficit to get back into the match. However, Julian couldn’t keep up the impetus in the decider, eventually conceding the game to finish 2-3. Disappointingly, Tom Knight, out of form after a relaxing summer, could not win through despite a match point in the fourth, making too many errors to lose in five. Joe Mack lost in three against a stronger opponent.

The fourth team was out-played by a strong team from Crawley 3, losing 0-5. Jim Gowans came close to banking a win as he rallied his way back into the match, just losing the tie-break in the last game to finish 2-3. Conrad Thompson came back in the third to take the game as he stepped up the pace, but lost dominance of the court to lose 1-3, while Trevor Morgan also grabbed a game as his drop shots found their mark before losing in four. A two generation age gap separated Bob Brimfield from his junior opponent which proved a bit too far against the perfect cross court volley drops with Bob losing in three. Ben Nelson kept working his way into his match against a stronger player, but could not bank a game to lose 0-3.

The fifth team had a better result away at Crawley 4, losing 2-3. James Holloway lost the first on a tie-break but placed the ball wider in the next three to win in four, while Andrew Barbour narrowly lost the first, but worked hard, keeping in the long rallies to also win in four. Sarah Naish took the opportunity of a game before her opponent stepped up the pace, losing 1-3, and Trevor Morgan had his chances of reversing his previous result against the same Crawley player dashed after losing the third to finish once again 1-3. Bill Baxter struggled to find winning drives in his games to lose in three.
