Haywards Heath Harriers staged an open track and field meeting at the K2 last Thursday when the feature events were the open mile races.

Performance of the night came from the host club’s Jessica Courtney, who won the 9-10 girls 600m by eight seconds and was also an impressive winner of the 150m

Harriers coach Linda Tullett said: “The weather conditions were perfect for a night of athletic action and there was a massive turn out from clubs across the area. It just proves that sport is booming in Sussex for all ages and abilities.” Results are on page 70.

On Sunday in a Youth Development League fixture at the Julie Rose Stadium, Ashford, there were six Harriers included in a composite team with Lewes AC and East Grinstead AC. They finished third out of seven.

Playing their part in achieving a great result were - U17G (A string only): Brittany Croydon-Kempster 300mH 3rd 55.96, 100m 6th 14.38, 400m (competing as an U20 B string) 3rd 72.88. U17B (A string only): Simeon Cousins 200m 3rd 25.26, 400m 5th 55.97, 400mH 3rd 76.22. Chris Curnock long jump 6th 3m44, shot 4th 5m92. George Owen javelin 5th 16m08, hammer 2nd 16m52, 100m 5th 13.49. U20W (A and B strings): Abi Hosier 400mH B string 1st 80.05, 400m A string 4th 68.89, hammer A string 1st 9m89, discus A string 4th 17m07. Lana Shaw 100m B string 3rd 14.01, discus B string 2nd 11m63.

Clair Park in Haywards Heath on Saturday was the exciting venue for the trial run of a Parkrun for Mid Sussex. Harriers are working with Burgess Hill Runners in this exciting new venture and there were 36 local runners of all abilities trying out the course.

Joint winners from both clubs were James Collins and Mark Davies, while Ann Sinett was first female on this challenging hilly but scenic 5K route. Young Harrier Josh Essex ran well in this early morning challenge along with his dad Michael.

Hopes are that the trials and testing will be finalised in time for a launch in July.

At the Triangle last weekend, the Swimarathon was raising money for Marie Curie Cancer Care. On Sunday afternoon, just two weeks after completing the Brighton Marathon, Harrier Andy Biggs in the 5km event swam 200 lengths in a time of 1hr 31.04mins.

This Bank Holiday is the Sussex Living Marathon weekend. It starts with a 10-mile race on Saturday in East Grinstead, followed by the 10-mile Sussex Grand Prix race on Sunday in Haywards Heath and then on Monday a 10k in Burgess Hill. More than 1,000 runners are expected to take part in total.
