Brighton Fringe: what happens when life pushes someone too far?

Stewart Taylor explores themes of stress and anxiety and our human need for play in his one-man show SPILLAGE! which he brings to Sweetwerks, Middle Street, Brighton from October 12 to 18.

“It combines a variety of forms and will be of particular interest to audiences who engage with spoken word, physical theatre and issues of mental health.

“A recent survey by The Mental Health Foundation revealed that 74 per cent of people have felt ‘so stressed they have been overwhelmed or unable to cope’. But have you ever wondered what happens when life pushes someone too far? What is the state we enter when we can no longer hold onto everything that keeps us ‘normal’?

“SPILLAGE! takes us to that very place. It shows us an ordinary office worker, Dan, as he attempts to keep up with the ever-increasing range of deadlines set by his superiors at the vast corporate enterprise L.A.P. Giles. Everything is just about fine until he spills his coffee. All over his clean white shirt. What follows is a roller-coaster journey through his inner world with all its worry, hurt and lost joy.

“Yet SPILLAGE! is liberally sprinkled with comedy, having had creative input from international art clown Jamie Wood as part of its development.”

Show director Anna Carr said: “Lots of people have related to the humour in it and have needed the humour in it.”

SPILLAGE! is written and performed by spoken word artist Stewart Taylor, former winner of the UK Anti-Slam, a tongue-in-cheek poetry competition where the ‘worst’ poet wins.

“Working on SPILLAGE! has enabled us to bring a lot of different elements into one show including clowning, puppetry and dance,” he says. “It’s developed well beyond its spoken word roots into a fully realised piece of theatre.”

SPILLAGE! was successfully presented at Nuffield Southampton Theatres last year. It now appears at Sweetwerks, Middle Street from October 12-18 as part of the rescheduled Brighton Fringe Festival. Tickets for the show are available through sweetwerks.com
