Burgess Hill Choral Society still managed to celebrate Christmas despite all the restrictions.

As chairman Jane Leng explains: “Despite the government restrictions on meeting, in person, for rehearsals and concerts this year, Burgess Hill Choral Society has remained very active with virtual rehearsals and social events.

“We held a very successful online concert on Saturday, December 5 which featured Vivaldi’s Gloria, madrigals and choruses from Jenkins’ The Armed Man and Rossini’s Petite Messe Solenelle in addition to Elgar’s lovely As Torrents in Summer.

“Two of our choir members Mike Hanna and David Mortimer sang beautiful solos during the concert.”

One of the main challenges for choirs who are meeting virtually at this time is that time lags over the internet mean it isn’t possible to sing together live.

“However we were not to be defeated and, as a culmination to this term, have accomplished an impressive recording of Rutter’s Candlelight Carol.”

They have produced a video from individual recordings which were “seamlessy collated by our redoubtable musical director Michael Stefan Wood” using digital technology.

“The incorporation of photographs of choir members, orchestral accompaniment and complementary artwork has also enhanced this moving video.

“I, along with many others, thought my individual submission was rather inadequate, but we are clearly more than the sum of our parts as the end product is something we are very proud of and it has given us fresh hope about what we shall achieve in the future.”

Burgess Hill Choral Society begins a new term on Monday, January 11 when there will be a focus on Haydn’s Creation as well as a range of smaller pieces of music. New members are welcome, regardless of previous experience singing, and for further details Jane advises contacting the society via the website: www.burgesshillchoralsociety.org.uk and visiting the BHCS facebook site: https//www.facebook.com/BHCS2
