Dream production of Purcell’s Fairy Queen at refurbished church

Henry Purcell’s Fairy Queen heads to St John sub Castro Church in Lewes on Sunday, June 21.

Based on A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare, the vibrant production consists of masques and dances.

The East Sussex Bach Choir will be accompanied by Michael Fields on lute or theorbo and Nicholas Houghton on harpsichord and organ.

The dramatic components of the piece are performed by soloists Catrin Woodruff (soprano), Agata Rybicka (alto), Luke Churchill (tenor) and Andrew Robinson (bass), with ESBC members and guest singers from local choirs.

Jonathan Cullen’s narration will make the link between music and drama, continuing the seventeenth century convention of combining the two on stage, while, at the same time, keeping them separate.

The ESBC is directed by John Hancorn.

This will be one of the first concerts at the refurbished St John sub Castro Church, the new premiere concert venue for Lewes.
