Tales of teachers, kids and courage at book lovers' club in Ditchling

Award-winning novelist Chris Cleave is coming to The Book Lovers' Supper Club at The Barn in Ditchling on Wednesday, June 15.

Chris’s first novel, Incendiary, won the Somerset Maugham Award and his second, The Other Hand, was a global bestseller and in the New York Times Top Ten for more than a year.

He will be discussing his new book, Everyone Brave Is Forgiven, an unconventional wartime epic about a young teacher that skilfully weaves together history, love and courage in war-torn London.

Appearing with him will be bestselling author Claire Fuller, whose debut novel, Our Endless Numbered Days is set in the hot summer of 1976.

It tells the story of eight-year-old Peggy Hillcoat and her survivalist father, who takes her from London to a cabin in a remote European forest. She is not seen again for nine years…

This book won the Desmond Elliott prize for debut fiction, beating Emma Healey’s Elizabeth is Missing. It was also picked for the Richard & Judy book club.

Tickets include a tapas-style Mediterranean supper from Sultan’s Delights, and a free glass of wine.

Doors open at 6.45pm. The Barn is on Lodge Hill Lane, Ditchling. Tickets are £25 from tabl.com (plus 75p booking fee) and can be purchased at Ditchling Post Office.

The Book Lovers’ Supper Club was set up in 2012 by journalist Melanie Whitehouse.

Melanie said: “We’ve had a brilliant three years in Ditchling and Hurstpierpoint and attracted some top writers such as Kate Mosse, Emma Healey, Sophie Hannah, William and Virginia Nicholson, Daisy Waugh, Erin Kelly, Dorothy Koomson, Judy Astley, Helen Lederer, Penny Junor and Kate Hamer.”
