Rotary Club of Senlac

THE Rotary Club of Senlac welcomed Jean Burke, associated with literacy, learning and child service, to speak of involvement with the annual Bexhill Children's Book Festival.

The 2008 independent festival is in process of being planned and a copy of the 2007 programme enabled Rotarians to view activities that had taken place on day of event.

Sessions included a children's poet, an author and an illustrator, Shoe Baby Puppet Show and Winnie the Witch Party.

The Festival commenced at the De La Warr Pavilion in 2002. Meeting favourite authors encourages children to develop imagination, become interested and inspired through reading. Authors visit schools which enables children to ask questions and learn through dialogue of the characters which stimulate reading of quality books.

The annual festival encourages a partnership with children and parents to participate in positive activities to promote learning in a relaxed atmosphere; also inclusion of craft skills, viewing the drawing of popular characters associated with well-known children's books and a listening ear for readings by a storyteller.

Authors are able to autograph known popular books. Creating interest in reading, the festival is ever-popular and well-supported.

With the Bexhill Schools Consortium, East Sussex County Council, Rother District Council and De La Warr Pavilion it is clear the support is offering a valuable fun-packed community service. Following questions, Rotarian Annette Hardy summarised the content of the Children's Book Festival programme and offered a Vote of Thanks to the speaker for outlining a very worthwhile educational benefit.
