Studio goes global

This October drama in Crawley Hawth’s Studio is Going Global in celebration of diverse cultures and artists from all over the globe, as part of the theatre’s programme of world events supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

On Monday, October 3 at 7.45pm, international company Slingshot Theatre give Commedia dell’Arte a 21st century face-lift with their hilarious and raucous new masked comedy The Zanniskinheads and the Quest for the Holy Balls.

Spokeswoman Lorraine McGregor said: “This loud, rude, joyous, irreverent show is performed in English and French (plus some Spanish and German!) but the show’s exciting physical nature means everyone can follow the fun. Suitable for ages 13 plus.

“The following week on Monday, October 10 at 7.45pm, Two Gents Theatre perform Magetsi, inspired by the experiences of three million Zimbabweans that now live abroad and their experiences of returning home.

“The show follows a young man returning to Zimbabwe after ten years in England to bury his father; a newly-returned woman searching for a partner; and Ambuya who is campaigning for electricity for her home. This eclectic mix of characters leads audiences to think about just what home means.

“Tuesday October 11, 7.45pm, sees the return of Half Moon Theatre Company with urban thriller Look To The Sky. A lonely, disused warehouse. Three teenagers. One lost member of their group and a search along dark corridors and winding stairs that leads to a discovery which will change lives. This gripping new play for young people explodes the mysterious and sometimes frightening culture of inner-city youth. Suitable for ages 13 plus.”

The Nuffield and Yellowtale Theatre return with a new production of Shakespeare’s Othello on Thursday, October 20 at 7.45pm.

“Bahamian blood runs high in a radical and feisty reworking of the bard’s classic,” Lorraine said. “In this world of opposites, black is white, freedom is imprisonment, and love, through the distorting prism of jealousy, is as unpredictable as the ocean.

“With a Caribbean setting and reverse-race casting, Othello in The Hawth Studio is an exciting twist on a classic.”
