Haywards Heath fishmonger shortlisted for national retail award

The Farm Shop and Deli Awards, held in partnership with The Grocer, recognise the best standards in speciality retail and celebrate the highest levels of service, product knowledge, initiative, innovation and community involvement.

The awards span 11 categories, including Fishmonger of the Year, and winners will be announced at a ceremony held during the Farm Shop & Deli Show 2020 at the NEC Birmingham on Monday, March 30.

A judging panel deliberated over and scored nearly 90 entries, before creating a shortlist of 51 finalists across the award categories.

Sebastian Candelon, owner of The Fresh Fish Shop, said: “We’re very proud to have shortlisted as finalist for this prestigious national retail award.

“We have a mission to take sustainably caught Sussex seafood nationwide.

“The Fresh Fish Shop has been selling fish from the counter in our store for over 30 years.

“Despite originally being a market town, Haywards Heath is now a hub for commuters and we’ve seen the way the local community – and their shopping habits – have changed over the years.

“Although two major supermarkets have opened within 100 metres of our shop, our retail sales continue to grow and many customers have remained loyal to us since the very beginning.

“This is testament to the fact we put customer service at the heart of everything we do.

“We take our fresh fish to farmers markets every week, showcasing the very best local seafood and supporting local fisherman in the process.

“Our wholesale business has tripled in size since the start of 2019 and our team has doubled to 16 members of staff.

“Our motto is ‘more than just a fishmongers’ and we’re proud to demonstrate this every day – in our shop, at farmers’ markets, online and to our wholesale customers.”
