Banging and clanging in Wick drums-up healthy sum

THE thunderous beat of almost 200 home-made drums could be heard echoing through the quiet streets of Wick, on Friday (June 29).

About 180 children from White Meadows Primary School, in Whitelea Road, took part in a “Drumathon” for charity.

The pupils, aged between five and 11, turned up with home-made instruments – some more wacky than others – to take part in the event, which helped drum-up a healthy sum of cash for the deafblind charity Sense.

Everything from flowerpots and sweet tins were used to create the drums.

The young musicians then marched around the school, beating their newly-designed instruments.

Head of music at the school, Kirsty Porter, said that the event was a “brilliant success”, raising more than £100 for the charity.

“I think the whole of Wick could hear us during the Drumathon,” she admitted.

“We had a really creative set of entries from about 180 pupils with some very imaginative drums being created by some of the children.

“The atmosphere during the day was really buzzing. I know a lot of the pupils were really excited by the event.”

All the money will go to Sense, which helps support children and adults who have combined sight and hearing loss.
