Felpham students help to set a new world record

The teams of four pupils from Years 7, 8 and 9 at Felpham Community College used their literary know-how to enter the Guinness Book of World Records.

The contingent numbered 31 in all and was among 6,388 students around the UK who joined in in the successful co-ordinated attempt to set a new world best for the most people taking part in simultaneous literature quizzes at multiple venues.

A college spokesman said: “The students were required to answer six challenging rounds of nine questions in exam-style conditions on authors such as Roald Dahl, Philip Pullman, Malorie Blackman, Jacqueline Wilson and John Green.

“External organisers for the event attended and were required to send video and photographic evidence of the quiz.”

The students’ enthusiasm for books impressed the witnesses who counted the participants officially and ensured the event’s rules were obeyed. A total of 62 venues took part.

Official confirmation the quiz had set a new world best was announced on World Book Day last Thursday. The quiz took place between 2pm and 3pm on February 22.

Popular poet Lindsay Macrae was welcomed at the college last Thursday. She ran a series of workshops with groups of students from the same year groups.
