Kind Littlehampton girl sparks ‘Olympic Torch’ odyssey

WHEN creative schoolgirl Emily Twinn-Dorey saw the news that a paper Olympic torch, made by a five-year-old from Somerset, had sold for more than £2,000 for charity on eBay, she had a brainwave.

The seven-year-old River Beach Primary School pupil, from Littlehampton, decided to try her luck at designing her own torch, all to help local charity Jamie’s Wish.

And it’s proven a smash hit having already reached almost £80 since it was put up on the online auction site, on Saturday afternoon (July 7).

Now with the real torch just days away from visiting the district, thoughtful Emily hopes to her paper replica will be able to begin its own odyssey across the country.

“I saw it on the news on the tele and I thought ‘That’s a really good idea’,” admitted the youngster.

“I went straight to my playroom and started cutting out bits of paper and sticking them all together to make the torch.

“But mummy helped me a bit with the flames to get them the right colour.”

Emily said that she’d hoped to make £40 for the Littlehampton-based charity, but was stunned when, after only a couple of days, her creation made almost double that.

Emily’s mum Melanie Dorey said she was proud of her daughter for doing something for a charity that is very close to her heart.

“I knew Jamie’s family and I was friends with his sister. So it means a lot to me to help them in anyway possible,” she said.

The torch is available to bid on until Saturday.
