100 TRUANCY CASES

TAKING some parents to court over their children's absence is getting children back into school, claims East Sussex County Council.

The education welfare service offers support for parents but, in extreme cases, parents may be taken to court if they fail to co-operate.

From May 1, 2005, to April 30, 2006, more than 100 cases went to court.

Councillor Rupert Simmons, lead member for school effectiveness, said: 'If necessary, we have to get tough in the interests of a child's education and future.

'Our figures show that this approach is working.'
