A close shave for Hurstpierpoint College pupils

Eleven pupils from the senior school at Hurstpierpoint College have raised almost £1,500 for Cancer Research UK after completing a sponsored head shave.

Staff and pupils gathered in the college chapel to watch the boys bravely lose their locks in support of life saving research.

Fifth former, James Henriet,16, orchestrated the fundraising event from start to finish.

He said: “At the start of the year I wanted to try something new and Cancer Research UK’s work affects so many. To raise this much money for them is incredible.”

James began his search for participants in early January and found no shortage of volunteers, especially after explaining to them the difference that research can make to millions of sufferers.

Abigail Wood, a Central Fundraising Executive for the charity, said: “Cancer Research UK has made enormous progress in the fight against cancer and continues to do so. However, we have only been able to do this thanks to the dedication and commitment of our volunteers.”

“It is so important that young people like James get involved in the work of Cancer Research UK.”

After all the boys were trimmed and feeling extra chilly around the ears, James said: “Thank you to everyone involved for making the day such a success and particularly those who donated to support us.”
