Alarm as storm erodes more beach in Pagham

Two more metres of Pagham's fragile coastline was washed away during stormy weather.

Anxious residents bombarded parish council chairman Cllr Ray Radmall with their concerns.

He told Tuesday's (January 13) meeting of the council: "Large areas of vegetation have been torn down the beach and significant pieces of old concrete winch bases have been uncovered.

"This situation needs to be monitored, though there is no panic."

Cllr Val Tomlinson said her bungalow close to the beach shocked with the pounding of the waves on the beach as they took away the shingle.

A discussion also took place among councillors at the meeting about the possible distribution of sandbags if the area around Pagham Beach is flooded.

An evacuation plan has been compiled in case waves overwhelm the eroding beach, which took a battering last winter.

Possible coast protection schemes are the subject of controversy because residents believe the needs of birds at the nearby Pagham Harbour nature reserve are being put ahead of themselves.
