Alert resident foils bogus teenage girl callers

SUSPECTED bogus callers were foiled by a Woodville Road resident who had read warnings in the Bexhill Observer about a spate of distraction burglaries.

Alarm bells started ringing for the resident when two teenage girls knocked on her door and asked if they could come in and call an emergency doctor for their mother who had fallen ill.

They said they had just moved into the area from Milton Keynes and were not yet on the phone.

The resident had read several warnings in the Observer about teenage girls using a similar story in the area of Cooden Drive and Park Road. In those cases one had distracted the owner while the other stole items from the house.

She said one of the girls could come in just in case they were telling the truth but when she did so the teenagers babbled excuses and left.

The girls were both around 15 years of age. One was around 5ft 2ins with long blond hair, blue eyes, slim build and spoke in a southern accent.

Sgt Dave Costigan said: "The resident did exactly the right thing and thanks are due to the Observer for publicising the issue.

"Bexhill Police would stress that all householders should be extremely cautious before allowing strangers into their home,

"They should ensure that not more than one is admitted if it is believed that there is any legitimate reason for them to come in,

"They should be kept under watch at all times and householders should not allow themselves to be distracted by requests for a 'glass of water' or to 'use the toilet.'
