Anger after parking tickets for Worthing street's permit holders

DOZENS of residents woke up to find tickets on their cars after the council banned them from parking in their own road.

The council suspended parking in St Matthew's Road from 7am on Tuesday, November 24, to carry out cleaning, a decision branded as "disgraceful behaviour" by Heene ward councillor Paul High.

Resident Ben Feingold found he had been given a parking ticket when he left for work at 8.10am.

He said traffic wardens were patrolling the street from 7am and he saw at least 15 cars with tickets on them when he left.

He said: "What makes this worse is not only has someone at the council not had the forethought to put the restrictions in place after law-abiding, road and council tax paying voters have left for work/school/etc., but this is a residents-only parking area where we pay the council already for the privilege to park there!"

Astounded

Paul High said: "I am astounded by this.

"Obviously, the attendants were told to be there at 7am ready for action.

"This is, in my opinion, disgraceful behaviour."

A council spokeswoman said a cleansing team noticed the water was ponding in St Matthew's Road and asked for some parking suspension notices to be put out to allow the leaves and other waste to be cleared.

"Unfortunately", only 24 hours notice was given meaning some residents had not noticed the signs.

"We are advising all those who got a parking ticket that they can appeal against the decision," said the spokeswoman.
