ANGER AT FLOOD WARNING SNUB

ANGER has greeted a decision by the Environment Agency to put up posters urging people to sign up to a flood warning service '“ but not in Lewes.

The posters are appearing at Worthing, Haywards Heath and Eastbourne railway stations.

But Lewes, which suffered worst of all in the floods of 2000, has been left out.

An Agency spokesman told the Express it was felt that the priority for such posters should be in towns which did not suffer so badly in the past, because flood risk awareness would not be currently as strong in those towns as in places like Lewes.

He added: 'Lewes has not been forgotten. We had a flood caravan there last year and meetings are to take place in the town soon to recruit more flood wardens.'

But Maureen Messer of Lewes Flood Action said: 'The Agency has got it wrong again.

'What about the people who arrived in Lewes after the floods? What do they know about it first-hand?

'People need to be reminded all the time, although not to be frightened, about what happened on that dreadful day.

'It is important for all those living in risk areas to be in the scheme.'
