Children were invited to put their soft toys to the test at St Mary’s Church, in Vicarage Lane, during a fun day last Saturday.

The Teddy Bears’ Jump Family Day saw more than 130 teddies brave an abseil down from the tower of St Mary’s Church.

Pauline McLelland, chairman of the social committee, said: “The fundraising event challenged the local teddy bears in our area to abseil down the church tower.

“More than 130 teddies braved the challenge, which proved to be a resounding success, not only for those taking part but also for the charity we were raising money for.”

For the bear owners and their families, there were all-day refreshments and ploughman’s lunches, plus teddy bears’ picnics for sale.

Various stalls, activities and an event draw added to the entertainment and a total of £2,000.

It was all the idea of Pauline’s husband, Malcolm, who is involved with the fabric of the church and wanted to raise much-needed money for future projects.
