Firefighters raced to the Bexhill and Hastings Wastewater Treatment Works at Freshfields, Bexhill Road, just after 3.30pm following reports that smoke had been seen pouring from the site.

However it appeared to be a false alarm.

A spokesperson for Southern Water, which is responsible for the plant, said the smoke was found to be coming from a neighbour’s bonfire.
