Cuckfield estate agent swaps houses for First World War heroes

Marcus Grimes & Co in Cuckfield has swapped pictures of houses in its window display with photos of the 71 young men of the village who were killed in the First World War.

The concept was agreed with the estate agent as part of the Cuckfield Remembers commemorations nearly a year ago.

The driving force in preparing the images was orchestrated by residents Sue Burgess and Philippa Malins who obtained the information about each servicemen from the village library, where a book by Shirley Bond lists their name, age, regiment and where and when they died.

Marcus said “We thought it would be rather nice to do something a bit more personal than just a name.

“The photographs and detail make their sacrifice just that more real.”
