Busy day for Worthing firefighters as storm wreaks havoc

Crews at Worthing Fire Station have been so busy today (Saturday, November 14) they had to call for assistance from the town's retained firefighters.

Stormy weather has caused "chaos" across Worthing.

Retained firefighter crew commander James Smithers said: "It has been an incredibly busy day and my retained firefighters have done a marvellous job helping out the normal Worthing crew.

"We have had six or seven retained crew helping a watch of 12 full-time firefighters with a number of call-outs today."

One of the more serious weather-related incidents was in Limbrick Corner, Worthing, where the Post Office's roof had began to come off.

Crew commander Smithers said: "The scene was carnage with roof sheeting falling off onto cars, denting cars, and debris strewn over the pavement."

In Broomfield Avenue, Worthing, retained firefighters had to make a house structurally safe after a chimney collapsed and fell through to a conservatory.

An aerial at a property in Portland Road needed securing, as did an aerial on the WH Smith's building in Montague Street.

Further along Montague Street, fire crews were called to the newly opened H&M store where roof flashing was flapping around in the wind.

Worthing fire crew also attended a house in Manor Road where roof tiles had come loose, and in Eirene Road some loose roof sheeting also needed to be made safe.

As well as the weather related jobs, firefighters were called out to the public toilets in Ardsheal Road where a suspected arson attack had taken place.
