Campaigners say housing infrastructure fears have not been alleviated

Sue Ware, co-founder of Save Angmering Village (SAV), said she believed Arun District Council was ‘succumbing to pressure from Government’.

While she conceded new housing was needed, much of the need was based on projected population growth driven by people commuting to jobs outside the area, she said.

She said: “We realise we need new houses in Arun, but not as many as they are suggesting.

“These houses are going to be for in-migrants to out-commute and it’s only going to exacerbate an already creaky infrastructure.”

Sue also believes the infrastructural deficit cannot be fixed by the developers of new homes because they will only have to mitigate the effects of any extra burden their houses place on it.

SAV is also concerned that the proposed new homes could negatively affect the commercial aspects of the council’s local plan.

Sue added: “In Angmering the council has said the horticultural industry is thriving, but what they are proposing to do, by building the new houses, would wipe that out.

“Part of their local plan is to boost the employment prospects in the area, but where they are planning to build the houses would have a negative impact on that.”
