Cream Teas and Crafts:A reminder that the WI’s Cream Tea and Craft Sale fund-raising event for ‘The Air Ambulance Service’ is tomorrow. This will be held in the Village Hall from 3pm – 5pm and admission (to include a cream tea and cake) will be £4 for adults and £2 for children. There will be craft stalls selling items made by local, talented people and also a cake stall.

Summer Fete and Flower Show: As Delia Smith so famously yelled at a football match ‘Come on – let’s be ‘aving yer!’ This is aimed at ALL Catsfield residents (young and old and including new-comers to the village) who want to see the continuation of the traditional Summer Fete and Flower Show held annually on the Playing Field. This is in imminent danger of being its last year unless willing volunteers come forward with offers of help pretty quickly. It’s only another two weeks away on Saturday 1st August, so please don’t leave it all to the usual local stalwarts who need your help. Donations are also needed for the various stalls - bric-a-brac, bottles, books, plants, cakes - anything sellable in fact or suitable for prizes. Please contact Vanessa on 01424 844363 for any offers of help. The schedules for the Flower Show are available in the Village Stores with a wide selection of classes to enter, so come on and have a go. You don’t have to be an expert and its great fun setting out your entries in the morning whilst eyeing up the opposition, then coming back when the marquee has re-opened to see how you’ve got on and whose entries have been judged the best. The dance in the evening will again feature ‘The Swing Band’ and even if you’re not a dancer, it’s great entertainment and a chance to enjoy a lovely social village get-together.

Family Service: This Sunday 19th July, the service of Holy Communion at the parish church of St Laurence will be at the earlier time of 9am and will be followed by the very popular Family Service at 10am.

Sport: A local derby against Crowhurst on Sunday promises a closely fought game and this will be our last home game for quite a while. While last Sunday, Captain Keith Cook hung on as long as possible on a wet morning eventually making the decision not to cancel, relying upon the local weather forecast to predict that we would get a game in. It was never a question of the pitch being too wet as it is pretty hard, just whether the grass would be too slippery for bowling. We batted first and got 170 for 9 with an explosive innings from Martin Gurr of 47, next highest score Tim Pitman of 29 and David Pratt 21. After tea and in occasional drizzle Southbourne achieved 171 for 6, thus winning by 4 wickets. Connor Earl was the most successful bowler with figures of 3 for 37, with a wicket each for Tim Pitman, Andy Williams and Tom Bristow-Diamond.

Harvest: Farmers are getting ready for the rape harvest, hoping there will be no thunderstorms to damage the crops. More rain is needed to get the grass growing again for haylage, but constant gentle downpours would be ideal both for agriculture and our gardens. Be sure to get your schedules for the flower show and see what you can enter.
