Chichester University urged to invest in multi-storey car park for its Bognor campus

University bosses have been urged to build a multi-storey car park at their campus in Bognor Regis to ease parking problems for nearby residents.

The University of Chichester has devised a masterplan of its initial intentions to expand the amount of learning on its site on Upper Bognor Road.

The focus is on turning it into a centre for sporting excellence by building on the university's global reputation, and encouraging business enterprise activity and creativity.

This would see the number of students doubled from around 1,000 to 2,000-plus if the final multi-million pound funding for the increase in courses is approved this summer.

But the university's intention to create 180 new parking spaces to take the total number to 350 was condemned as councillors generally welcomed the university's plans.

A demand by Cllr Francis Oppler that the need for adequate parking should be included in the council's response to the university's initial proposals was readily accepted by Arun economic regeneration boss Cllr Norman Dingemans and agreed by other council members.

Cllr Oppler said: "This reflects the seriousness of the matter."

Residents on the neighbouring Glenwood estate faced ongoing problems with bad parking by students in the residential roads.

"It has been breathtakingly bad at times," he stated. "Another 180 parking places on the campus is nowhere near enough.

"The only way we can serve the community in the northern part of Bognor is to ensure the university goes for a major multi-tiered parking facility on the campus."
