Christmas charity record

Uckfield Rotary Club's Christmas collection was the most successful on record this year, with nearly £3,000 raised in two weeks.

Members of the club spent the fortnight before Christmas collecting at their Christmas tree in Uckfield High Street.

President Tom Booth said: 'I, and all the members of the club, would like to thank all the members for helping the club raise a massive 2,982, an approximate 20 per cent increase on last year's record amount.

'As always, the monies raised at our Christmas tree are used by the club to support Rotary's charitable work in the local and world communities.'

The Christmas tree has been donated to the Uckfield Rotary Club for over 50 years by local engineering company C.J.Thorne. Mr Booth added: 'The club once again extends it's sincerest thanks to Mr Richard Thorne, for again supplying the tree, and helping make this years collection such an outstanding success.'

Mr Booth also expressed delight at the success of the club President's Appeal which goes to local businesses and individuals and which has so far brought in a record-breaking 3,481.

'Once again, I would like to thank all those people who responded to my appeal letter in such a positive way and made this year's appeal such an outstanding success.' He also paid tribute to club secretary Peter Wills for organising and collating the appeal.

Committees of the club will be meeting soon to discuss how and where the money will be spent.
