Climate minister role for Battle MP

Bexhill and Battle Tory MP Greg Barker has had his watching brief as a minister of state for energy and climate change confirmed under the new coalition.

Mr Barker, 44, re-elected to Parliament earlier this month, had been a shadow minister for climate change while in opposition to Gordon Brown's government.

But with close friend David Cameron now Prime Minister, and with Liberal Democrat Chris Huhne confirmed as Climate Change Secretary, his hour has now come.

The non-Cabinet role carries a combined salary of 98,740, which includes his parliamentary salary of 64,766.

In common with other ministerial posts under the new administration, Mr Barker's pay as a minister has been cut by five per cent, or 5,197, from the outset.

Joining him as a minister of state in the same department is fellow Conservative and neighbouring constituency MP, Charles Hendry, who represents Wealden.

Both men have been MPs since 2001 and both have considerable experience of environmental and climate change issues.

Mr Barker said: "It is a huge honour to serve in David Cameron's administration.

"This new coalition is committed to deliver the changes Britain needs and I am determined to work with our coalition partners in the constructive way I think constituents expect.

"However despite taking on these exciting ministerial duties, I remain first and foremost a champion for our area and will always be there for local people when they need me, regardless of political party."
