Construct a crossing, not a layby

I wholeheartedly support Mr Phillip's letter (Observer, March 1) and his plea for a crossing on Felpham Road, near the lychgate to St Mary's Church. Indeed, the stretch of Felpham Road between the shops can also be very difficult to cross.

This relates particularly to the speed of vehicles using the road.

I understand the police plan to circularise a road sign at certain road junctions to remind motorists that Felpham is a village with a 30mph speed limit.

Apparently there is not enough money available to erect permanent signs.

You probably know of the plan under consultation to create a layby in Summerley Lane, aiming to improve the traffic flow in the lane at a cost of 60,000.

The congestion occurs mainly at weekends when King George V field is in full action. That is on two days out of seven.

Surely it would be to a much greater advantage, including safety to pedestrians, to erect permanent reminder signs about speed limits, and a pedestrian crossing near the church, than a layby which would be a very uncertain blessing at 60,000?
