Brighton and Hove City Council will consult on its draft plan for the Hangleton site later this month, which will be used as a guide to determine future planning applications for the land.

The 37-hectare site, which is privately owned, is on the northern fringe of the city - with the A27 to the north, and King George VI Avenue to the south.

The council hopes the site can deliver at least 700 homes, 25,000 square metres of employment space and a new school. The planning guide also looks at how community, play and sport facilities, and areas for food growing can be incorporated into the development.

Councillor Julie Cattell, lead member for planning strategy at Brighton and Hove City Council, said: “The draft guidance identifies opportunities for making the best use of the Toads Hole Valley site to meet the needs of new and existing communities. Your views will help shape guidance that will influence future planning applications.

“Our aim is to deliver high quality and sustainable development on the site, improving open space and transport infrastructure.”

More than 200 people responded to a first round of consultation on proposals last year, which helped council planning officers identify the issues causing most concern, including safe access to and from the site and the need for shops and community facilities.

The six-week consultation to shape the final plan takes place from February 27 to April 10.

There will be staffed exhibitions at Hangleton Community Centre (10am-1pm) and St. Peter’s Church, West Blatchington (1.30pm-4.30pm) on Saturday, March 18.

Brighton and Hove City Coumcil said responses received during consultation will help shape the final version of the planning guidance for the site, which will be presented to councillors at the economic development and culture committee in the spring.
